Anika Denise grew up in Queens, but spent nearly every summer of her life with her family in the Adirondack Mountain region of New York. As a result, she’s a little bit city mouse, a little bit country mouse, and can fall asleep to the sound of car traffic—or crickets—but not in the complete quiet. She attended Ithaca College and graduated with a B.S. in Marketing Communication and her first jobs were in advertising and public relations. A love for the arts drew her to fine arts and performing arts marketing—and eventually, working with authors, bringing beloved children’s books to the stage.
Publishers Weekly hailed her latest picture book Monster Trucks, illustrated by Nate Wragg,”a mash up made in heaven” in a recent starred review. Her other published books are Pigs Love Potatoes, a Parents’ Choice honor winner, Bella and Stella Come Home, chosen by the Rhode Island Center for the Book to represent the state of Rhode Island at the National Book Fair in Washington DC, and Baking Day at Grandma’s, which School Library Journal praised as, “Perfect for individual sharing, storytime, baking time, and pretty much any time.” Anika’s forthcoming titles include: Starring Carmen (Abrams 2017) and The Best Part of Middle (Henry Holt 2018).
In addition to writing children’s books, Anika is co-editor of The Little Crooked Cottage, a children’s book blog celebrating authors, illustrators and their creations.
She is married to the talented children’s book illustrator, Christopher Denise, and the couple has three daughters. They currently reside in Barrington, Rhode Island, but still make it back to the Adirondacks every summer to listen to the crickets, read books, and breathe in the mountain air.
